Kundapur, June 1: The anti-naxal operations in the taluk has been intensified to contain naxals with arrival of monsoons.

Naxals have expanded their operations over Jadkal, Mudoor, Hallihole, Devarabalu, Yadamoge, Hosangady, Bhagemane, Shankaranarayana, Amasebail, Jaddinagadde, Tombattu, Madamakki, Macchattu in Kundapur taluk and villages like Hebri, Kabbinale, Nadpal and Ajekar in Karkala taluk. The naxal activities in these areas have not received a setback even after the Devarabalu incident.

After the encounter, naxals exploded grenades at Mattav cross, Hebri, burnt down the motorbike of Sadananda Shetty at Mutlupady and raided the house of Nadpal Bhoja Shetty a few days ago. Madamakki Gram Panchayat president Shivanand Shetty too received threatening calls from the naxals some days ago.

It is said the number of members in the naxal gangs has increased after the Devarabalu encounter and naxals continue to remain active. Tombattu, located amongst thick forests which are difficult to venture into, has become a safe haven for naxals and the statements of locals further confirms this.

Residing at the foot of the western ghats during the monsoon months is agonising experience. People are harassed by long spells of heavy rains, leeches, bisons, snakes, scorpions and wild boars, routinely. The naxals therefore, try to hole themselves up in the houses. The innocent villagers get trapped.

It is monsoon again and the trained special police task force, Anti-Naxal Force and police have begun their operations. The unclear government’s stand on the naxals has now made the residents of the naxal-infested areas apprehensive.
